A light on while sleeping may impact glucose levels

by admin

Sleep is essential. But how you sleep could be equally important. Many people use a nightlight to sleep. You may be surprised that this could have a serious impact on your health. Recent research has shown that people who watch TV or sleep with the light on at night are more likely than others to develop type 2 diabetes. The study could not determine if the light caused the health issues.

Learn More About The Study

The study was conducted by Phyliss ZEE at Northwestern University Feinberg Medical School in Chicago. It involved 20 participants. Participants were asked to stay in a sleep laboratory for two nights. Each participant was asked to sleep in an entirely dark room on the first night. On the second night, half of the participants slept completely in darkness and the other halves slept with a light equivalent to a television or bedside lamp.

The Study Results

Each morning, the group’s blood glucose levels were measured. The tests assessed the main hormone needed to regulate blood sugar levels. One test measured glucose and insulin after waking. Another measure involved administering glucose to people and measuring their insulin responses. The results showed that those who slept in a dimly-lit room the night before had slightly higher glucose levels the next morning. The participants who slept in the dark for two nights had a little change in glucose levels.

What Does HTML0 Mean?

The study was interesting and sheds light on the impact of light levels at nighttime on glucose levels, but it is not large enough for any conclusions to be made. It will take more research to understand the relationship between light and blood glucose levels.

Healthy Sleep Habits

Healthy sleep habits are important. Resting properly will help you be ready for the day. To ensure you get enough rest, it’s best to sleep for eight hours each night at the same time. Sleep in a quiet, cool environment without too much light or noise. Also, it’s recommended that you remove any distractions that can make it hard to fall asleep and stay asleep. You should contact your doctor if you notice any changes to your sleep patterns.
